Buctown Crew is the first student section spread in Laney High School’s history. Not that we haven’t had extraordinary student sections, but in the past we lacked the photography skills to capture the enthusiasm of the students in action. This year, coming off of COVID, we knew the student section would feel energized. I wanted to make sure their passion was featured.
Pride is also the first spread representation of the LGBTQ+ community. Having to ask such personal questions about someone’s sexuality made it difficult to find people willing to share their story. With this spread, I wanted to reveal a community when you flip to this page. I wanted those who are struggling to know that they aren’t alone.
For You Page was published in the 2020-2021 book, The Next Page. This year was heavily impacted by COVID. We were so proud of ourselves for creating pages as interesting as this Tik Tok spread since we had to do it all virtually. We decided to include this spread because students were spending so much of their time on Tik Tok. This was also the first page where I used my drawing ability from my IPad and Apple Pencil.
We Run This Town is a great example of my design abilities within athletics. I loved taking on this spread because I was able to draw from my experiences as a cheerleader. I enjoy incorporating little details such as the title overlapping the cheerleaders' hands.
Setting Big Goals was my first spread where I used the coloring technique in the dominant. My teacher had shown me how to apply this effect in Indesign. I eagerly took her suggestion of grabbing the orange from the basketball and making it our dominant color.
Going Live tapped into my creativity with full page dominants, as well as secondary coverage designs. I made the design more appealing for our book when I added a twist on a photo booth picture strip for the secondary.
We’re the … became the theme of the 2021-2022 yearbook. This year we captured the students on the front cover to show the community at our school. At times we struggled to show the diversity of the school using only one picture.
Division Pages were created with the words that complete the sentence “We’re the”... Moment. Movement. Shift. We couldn’t decide on one defining word for the cover, so we chose to be undefined. I like that these division pages represent the simplicity of design, as well as interesting photos.
Blue Collar Gold Standard was my favorite page from the 2020-2021 book, The Next Page, because of the secondary coverage. Playing with alternative coverage options is appealing to the eye. This represents the starting lineup on their spots on the field. This sparked my creativity for future secondary coverages.
Diamonds Down was created to represent the hype and energy apparent at the Homecoming Football game. From the Homecoming Court to the band, these images highlight the diversity in our student body.
